New Orleans 2006

Lots of images of life here. There’s nothing like being here in person, but photos are  better than nothing. See captions for descriptions. Note: This journey starts in Metairie, a wealthy area, and moves to the 9th Ward, a very poor area. Metairie would not have been flooded, except that the pumping station operators for the W. Esplanade Canal were evacuated. Thus, the flooding was preventable, and so was the damage it caused: just one of the many Katrina stories.

Strange architectural juxtaposition: Colonial/Victorian next to 70s vertical
The levees are closed to humon traffic.
That didn’t stop us from climbing on this big pile of dirt.
Note how much higher the lake is than the houses.
Lake Ponchatrain is on the right in this photo.
Yes, a big pile of dirt. They just raised it.
High tech levee... NOT!
Pumping station for the canal
My bro and boyfriend standing next to the weird levee. Note wter line.
Interesting bird.
Other side of the pumping station, where the levee wasn’t raised.
It’s legal to walk on this one. See how green it is.
Again, not far down to the lake, but farther down to the homes.
A mansion right next to the pumping station (to the right of this road)
A gorgeous home & enchanted grotto garden.
Wealthy home with trailers on the tennis court.
Another view of this house being renovated.
Just another day in paradiiise... la la la. (Imagine 5 children living here!)
Yes, more trailers. That’s life in the RICH areas.
The canal.
The neighbor’s pool. Still has Katrina water in it.
Closer to the Industrial Canal now.
Starts getting messy...
and more wrecked.
Scenes of destruction.
Paint indicates pets found.
These pink buildings were just cool.
